Here at ABS, aluminium windows are what we do. From designing and installing them, to improving their appearance with powder coating. Aluminium windows create a stunning focal point to any room and come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes.

On the whole, aluminium windows are fairly low maintenance, especially compared with uPVC or wooden windows. However, like all aspects of your property, aluminium windows are prone to dirt build-up that needs to be taken care of on a regular basis.

Knowing how to clean your aluminium windows properly will ensure they look their best, and continue to do so for many years.

If you are on the lookout for the best cleaning tips for your aluminium windows, here is how to take care of them.

The method

First, grab a bowl of warm water and add in some washing up liquid. While it can be tempting to use harsher cleaning agents, the chemicals could damage your aluminium porthole windows. Dip a cloth or sponge into the water. Work from top to bottom, to ensure the dirt is moving down, rather than being left in uneven places.

For any stubborn areas of dirt, it’s okay to apply a little more pressure (a microfibre cloth is ideal for this). However, be sure not to scratch or damage your windows by being too forceful with your cleaning. Think of it as a gentle buff and rinse rather than a fierce scrub.

Once all visible signs of dirt have been removed, double-check any hard to reach areas. You can then complete the cleaning process by using a soft dry cloth to remove any excess moisture from your aluminium windows.

Points to consider

The age of your aluminium windows will be a factor in the cleaning method required. For example, newer aluminium windows that are powder coated or painted will require cleaning less often. The reason for this is that the enhanced finish tends to keep your aluminium round windows looking nicer for longer.

However, older aluminium windows require a cleaning process that is slightly more vigorous. A lack of powder coating or paint that is typical on older windows, means your windows have been exposed to the elements without protection. The dirt and potential damage have built up over a long period of time.

It’s always a good idea to powder coat your aluminium arched windows, and this is a service we provide here at ABS.

How often do aluminium windows need to be cleaned?

The age of your aluminium windows is also a factor that determines how often they need to be cleaned. If your windows are powder-coated, it’s a good idea to give them a clean every 12-16 weeks.

For older aluminium windows, you’ll need to clean them much more regularly – ideally, once a month. While you do so, it’s also a good idea to check for signs of damage including leaks.

The older your windows are, the more likely they have succumbed to damage. However, regular maintenance and cleaning will help to prolong their lifespan, in addition to getting your aluminium windows powder coated.
